AAU-Sugarcane, Medicinal & Aromatic Plants Research Station, Buralikson (erstwhile Sugarcane Research Station) established in 1970 is situated 45 kilometers to the west of AAU headquarters at Jorhat. It is situated in the Golaghat district (Latitude 26.46^oN, Longitude 94.12⁰E and altitude of 86.6 M above sea level), 15 km away from district headquarter, Golaghat and 12 km from Dergaon. Buralikson and its nearby villages was the main GUR (Jaggary) supplier to ‘Ahom Kingdom’. Therefore, this place has a historical importance. It is the only research station on sugarcane in the entire North East region. The station is implementing research projects sponsored by both the state govt. and the ICAR. It has the disciplines of Agronomy, Plant Breeding, Plant Pathology, Entomology, Soil Science and Plant Physiology. The research station occupies an area of 51.41 ha with two farm blocks, where Buralikson block occupies an area of 31.60 ha, Khonikar block occupies an area of 17.05 ha and Doria, natural rivulet occupies an area of 2.76 ha. The research station caters to the agricultural research and development needs of the people of Assam as well as North East India. It deals with production oriented applied research relating to varietal testing and evaluation, plant protection and crop management practices in Sugarcane. It has been manufacturing quality jaggery products besides supplying sugarcane planting materials (setts) to the sugarcane farmers and KVKs of Assam and NE Region, sugar/jaggery mills located at Lanka (Hojai district) and other research institutes and govt. agricultural departments of Assam and the North Eastern States. Research works and planting materials production of medicinal and aromatic plants also started recently.
